Yellowing of the skin and eyes is when the skin, and the whites around the eyes, have a yellowish hue. In adults, the source of this symptom may be due to liver conditions, bile duct obstruction, or cholecystitis (redness and swelling in the gallbladder). It takes place as a result of high levels of bilirubin (the red-orange substance made during the breakdown of hemoglobin) within the blood. This concern is also widely seen in newborn babies when the liver function is limited and not able to filter out bilirubin fast enough. At Hattiesburg GI Associates, PLLC, we can help identify the reason behind this symptom. If you would like further details on what causes yellowing of the skin and eyes and the reasons why it develops, request a consultation with our Hattiesburg, MS gastrointestinal providers today.
What causes yellow skin and eyes?
Although it is commonly a concern affiliated with liver dysfunction, this symptom could signal a genetically inherited blood disorder called thalassemia, in which an individual's body generates an insufficient level of hemoglobin. Yellow skin and eyes could further arise from one of these conditions:
- Sickle cell anemia
- Gallbladder problems
- Cancer of the pancreas
- Acute inflammation of the pancreas
- Hepatitis B, C, and E
- Infection
- Hepatitis D, Hepatitis A
- Hepatic cirrhosis

When yellowing of the eyes and skin is caused by an infection, individuals might also have a fever, chills, stomach aches, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, and clay-like stool. If it is established that the yellowing is not due to an infection, individuals might have weight loss or itching of the skin (pruritus). Our providers can find the cause of this symptom and provide the proper treatment required to ease yellow eyes or skin in Hattiesburg, MS patients.

Excellent CARE & Knowledge from Dr. Buckley and entire staff !!!
I have been seeing Dr Buckley for many years. He is one of the best doctors I have ever seen.
My experience at the clinic was amazing. There wasn’t a long wait time either, b4 I could sit down, the nurse was calling me to the back. I definitely recommend Dr. Buckley for GI. The staff was friendly, the clinic was clean & the location wasn’t hard to find. Dr. Buckley was very professional, he asks questions & gave me the chance to ask him questions, & he was hands on. You know how some doctors don’t really check you out but he did & he also explain what the medical was for & also the side effects, if any. Overall I give my doctor 👨⚕️ visit a 11/10!!
The person who called me to get my information was kind and professional but she did not speak English very clearly, I had trouble understanding her and I’m sure anyone with hearing issues would also. The email that was sent to me in no way in the cover stated it was prep information. I didn’t know who it was from . That definitely needs to be added. Everyone was kind and moved me along quickly, I really liked Dr. Farmer and his staff and would use him again.
I was able to get in quick and felt so at ease. Dr Sanchez looked over all of my results and test and was able to find the problem with out giving me the run around. His demeanor and care was top notch! I highly recommend you see him. He took so much time explaining and going over my diagnosis. I felt like he cared and wasn’t rushed out of the office. 10/10
